Dearest friend,

How are you on this beautiful morning? This sun such a nice reprieve from endless rain last week. I am slowing down more to soak up the warmth whenever I can.

May felt like the longest and shortest month! So many personal and professional things happened. I am still working on making sure that I still find pockets of joy in every day.

Sometimes I sit outside under the trees for a hurried lunch break and wonder if I am doing everything my little me wanted to do. The kind of thought that creeps up on you on a Tuesday afternoon, when the week feels endless.

Would she be happy with my job, my current city and what’s going on? Sometimes versions of us blur together and I don’t know who I am asking these questions to.

I turned 24 last month and every year the number starts to look more serious. I don’t know if I am where I thought I’d be at 24. Strangely, that feeling subsided on my birthday when I reopened the letter we had written at the latest Lassi and Letters Club event.

I wanted this event to be a gentle path down memory lane. To feel like you are going on a walk with your younger self. Their hands warmly nestled in yours.

One of the best parts of my role is bringing ideas to life. While designing and executing are totally different tasks, I enjoy the endless possibilities that come up when I plan an event. Each time I decide on a theme, it unknowingly aligns with what is going on at a particular time of my life. This was one such occasion.

We often hear about caring for our inner child. To reconnect and understand how our childlike self wanted to navigate the world. Although an easy concept on paper, it was so incredibly hard for me to learn how to do that.

My younger self felt so distant and unreachable. It feels like so much happened and her voice had become faint over the years, unable to compete the with noise of adulthood. This is when I realised that I just needed to do what I have always done: I turned to my pen and paper.

After spending some time coming up with the theme, I found that things just started falling into place. As this was the first time we had an event in a cafe and I was quite nervous about how it’ll all go. In the end, it was a perfect little morning where we were lost in our own worlds.

We started with envisioning our younger selves and drawing them out (I may be biased, but all the attendees were SO TALENTED!). Then picked a prompt by playing a small game and started writing.

We wrote about the perfect afternoon with our younger selves, food that takes us back to our childhood, and even letters revisiting our hopes and dreams.

Our hands were busy writing, stamping, sealing and gluing. We finished off the event by making a small frame filled with photos of your younger self and the words she needed to hear. Both as affirmations and reminders that she still lives within us.

From the outside you would’ve seen a table full of women writing letters, but all I could see was young girls in varying stages of life enjoying words of kindness and love from our older selves.

I couldn’t have asked for a better time! I had so much fun and most of all felt so glad we could be in the same room writing the same letters! The warmth of the event lingers, and I feel lighter. It is moments like these that make it so so special for me as a founder of this community. I am so passionate about bringing people together by using the power of words to bring hope, slow down and most importantly connect us.

Dearest Writer,

Welcome to our first letter together. I hope these words find you well! Our community is slowly growing, and I am so grateful for your support in shaping this space. I wanted this newsletter to be an extension of our letter-writing gatherings. Here you can expect to find personal essays on letter writing, South Asian culture, and most importantly, letters from our community! As a subscriber, you can expect early access to events, special discount codes and curated prompts for your own letter-writing adventures.

This year has been filled with many new beginnings. I have closed a few chapters, and I am slowly treading into new ones. It has been an exciting but anxiety-inducing time to say the least. I hope you have been keeping well with the circumstances. It has been a bleak time, watching what is happening around the world. At times, all our activities and efforts seem so futile.

As I lamented this with my co-workers, a beautiful soul encouraged me to continue looking for the good around me. She told me to refocus my energy on things I can influence and improve. To do things that bring me joy and a childlike wonder. So many people are dealing with so much; we are all trying to make the best of what was handed to us, and yet we can touch each other’s lives in beautiful ways.

We continue to be so tragically and beautifully human.

In a time when it is harder to be hopeful, it is important to be reminded about our own community. For the people who love us, often gently remind us to be kinder and gentler with ourselves. I don’t know about you, but transitioning into a new phase of adulthood has made it harder to find community. To find not only comfort, but guidance and, more importantly, hope.

I created Lassi and Letters to celebrate my love for a slower form of connection. I have always been someone who expresses herself most authentically through words. My childhood was filled with me writing letters to my family, making cards and drawing everything I saw around me. I would get lost in the possibilities of a blank sheet of paper, filling it with endless words.

With age, that childlike grasp on expression and emotion has been jaded. It has been a few years since I ventured into deeply personal writing, but I hope to continue writing in all the ways I can.

I am deeply grateful and honoured to have you read my words in our letter. I cannot wait to write more soon! My next letter will be all about our recent event ‘Letters to Our Younger Selves’ and all the beautiful things I learnt from it.
